Kupfer gemacht; oft bei Hom.: οὐδός Il. 8, 15, κέραμος 5, 387, δόμος 18, 371, τεῖχος Od. 10, 4; oft von Waffen, wie ϑώρηξ Il. 13, 398, χιτών 13, 440, πέλεκυς Od. 5, 235, ἔγχος Il. 3, 317 u. oft, σάκος 7, 220 u. sonst, ξίφος 3, 335. 16, 136; ἄξων 13, 30; οὐρανός 17, 425, wie Pind. P. 10, 27, im eigtl. Sinne (?), von Erz gemacht, wie das Himmelsgewölbe gedacht wurde; auch Ἄρης heißt so, von seiner Waffenrüstung, Il. 5, 704, wie Pind. Ol. 11, 15 I. 3, 33, der auch ἔγχος, λόγχα u. ä. so bezeichnet; dagegen χάλκεος Ζεύς, Ποσειδῶν, sind eherne Standbilder des Zeus u. des Poseidon bei Her. 9, 81; χάλκεον ἱστάναι τινά, Einen in Erz aufstellen, ihm eine eherne Bildsäule setzen, s. Wolf Dem. Lpt. 339; ἀνδριάντα χαλκοῦν ἐργάσασϑαι Plat. Eryx. 402 a. – Von ehernen Gefäßen, wie λέβης, Aesch. Ch. 675 Soph. Tr. 553 u. sonst. – 2) übertr., wie von Erz, fest, stark, hart, wie man wohl χάλκεοι ἄνδρες im Orak. bei Her. erklärt, obwohl dies, wie Ἄρης, auch auf die Rüstung bezogen werden kann; ἦτορ, ein ehernes, jeder Ermattung Trotz bietendes Herz, Il. 2, 490; ὄψ, eine eherne, stark tönende Stimme, 18, 222; dah. χάλκεον ὀξὺ βοᾶν Hes. Sc. 243; ὕπνος, der festeste, der Todesschlaf, Il. 11, 241; ὅμαδος Pind. I. 7, 25. – [Χάλκεος ist Hes. O. 149 zweisylbig gebraucht.]
