ἐπ-άρχω, 1) der Erste über Etwas, Befehlshaber sein, bes. eines eroberten Landes, χώρας πολλῆς Xen. Cyr. 4, 6, 2; ἔϑνους 1, 1, 4, wo es »seine Herrschaft über das Volk ausdehnen« bedeutet; Isocr. 4, 68. 122; ὅσων ἐπῆρχον Plat. Critia. 116 e; Sp., wie im Epigr. bei Paus. 6, 19, 6 ἐπῆρχε δὲ Μιλτιάδης σφιν. Bes. bei den Römern, Statthalter einer Provinz sein, übh. Präfekt sein, ἐπάρχοντες τῶν στρατοπέδων Hdn. 4, 12, 1. – 2) med., Hom. νώμησαν δ' ἄρα πᾶσιν ἐπαρξάμενοι δεπάεσσιν, Il. 1, 471. 9, 176 Od. 3, 340; οἰνοχόος μὲν ἐπαρξάσϑω δεπάεσσιν 18, 418. 21, 263. 272; H. h. Apoll. 125 Θέμις νέκταρ τε καὶ ἀμβροσίην ἐρατεινὴν ἀϑανάτῃσιν χερσὶν ἐπήρξατο; nach Nitzsch's Erkl. zu Od. 3, 340: sie theilten Allen aus (aus den vollen Mischkrügen), das Oberste, Erste (zum Weihgusse) eingießend den Bechern; denn immer ist von dem Anfange des Trinkens, der mit feierlicher Libation gemacht wird, die Rede, nur in der Stelle aus den Hymnen ist bloß an das Vertheilen zu denken. Andere beziehen ἐπί auf das Wiederbeginnen, noch einmal die Becher rechts herumgeben, oder wie Buttmann Lexilog. I, 105 von dem zu einem jeden einzelnen Gaste hintretenden u. ihm den Becher reichenden Mundschenken; Schol. Il. 1, 471 ἐπιχέαντες τοῖς ποτηρίοις διέδωκαν πᾶσιν ἢ ἀπαρξάμενοι σπονδὴν τοῖς ϑεοῖς πᾶσιν ἐνώμησαν. – »Anfangen« auch Inscr. 2144 ἐπάρχεσϑαι τοὺς χοροὺς χορείας τῷ Διονύσῳ.
