λέξις, ἡ, das Sprechen, der Ausdruck der Rede, Redeweise, Styl, vgl. Arist. poet. 6; Ggstz πρᾶξις; ἔστι τι εἶδος λέξεώς τε καὶ διηγήσεως, Plat. Rep. III, 396 b; ξένως ἔχω τῆς ἐνϑάδε λέξεως Apol. 17 d, öfter; λόγου Isocr. 5, 4, bes. vom Ausdruck der Prosa. – Auch von einem einzelnen Worte, Pol. 2, 22, 1; αὐταῖς λέξεσιν αἷς ἐκεῖνος κέχρηται, 8, 11, 5 u. öfter; Plat. u. A.; κατὰ λέξιν, wörtlich, S. Emp. adv. phys. 1, 92. Auch = eine Redensart, Ath. VII, 275 b. – Bei den Grammatikern bes. ein altes, seltneres, od. einem Schriftsteller eigenthümliches Wort, das der Erklärung durch ein bekanntes, γλώσσημα, bedarf; so λέξις κωμική, πλατωνικαί u. ä., auch collectivisch, von einer Sammlung solcher Wörter.
